The Weiner incident is just the beginning of a new golden age of comedy. Enjoy it.

Yesterday Washington politics reached a new low with a long-winded press conference where Rep Anthony Weiner (D-NY) admitted that he sent a picture of an apparent bulge in his underwear around the Internet by accident.

This fiasco began as rumors emerged, saying that Weiner had been sexting some women in Washington State using Twitter. Ah, Twitter!

The initial accusation was that Weiner sent out the picture to all his followers by accident. His intention was to message some hapless gal via a direct message (DM) on Twitter. Weiner realized the mistake and quickly erased the post. Some kid saw it and captured the details, however, and the rest became a farce, as Weiner tried to deny having any part in it.

Welcome to the world of social media!

For some stupid reason, Weiner decided not to deny that the pic was of him and that kept the conversation going and opened the door for a revelation that a serious cache of Weiner pics may exist. This all eventually forced the New York Congressman to stand up at a press conference to admit what he did and apologize to all the people who were besmirched in the process.

The social networking crowd is all over this, of course. Many accuse Weiner of being a classic idiot, who doesn’t know how to use software. This is not right, though. Apparently, the guy has been on Facebook forever, and he knew how to use Twitter. It was simply the kind of mistake everyone can make with crummy user interfaces. We’ve all made the “Reply All” instead of “Reply” error while emailing. About two or three times a year, I send this column to the wrong people because of auto-fill. I cannot really be accused of not knowing how to use email, can I? Well, maybe.

Coincidentally, the same morning of the Weiner admission, Good Morning America did a feature story on sexting. Hilarious.

So how should we approach this? First of all, Americans are prudes by and large. Personally, I think the government would be better run if all political candidates were required to post nude photos of themselves. I might even think it would be beneficial to have videos of them having sex. You can learn a lot from someone’s sexual acts, I bet. You’d get a handle on their politics, I’m sure.

Besides, it is our government that requires us to pass through a nude x-ray machine when we board an airplane. Turnabout is fair play.

And what’s wrong with sexting? If I was 19 years old, instead of a middle-aged dork, I’d do it. What better way to introduce yourself? “Hi! Look!” I think it would take a lot of mystery out of meeting. Most people today are not good conversationalists anyway. Just take pics of your private parts and pass them around instead of discussion deficit financing.

I can tell that this way of thinking is frowned upon. But what person didn’t go out of his or her way to find the Weiner pics? (Just out of curiosity, of course.) But the picture was so tame and useless that it even appeared on Network TV. I saw lewder pictures in the Montgomery Ward catalog a few years back.

Social media is just encouraging this sort of behavior. That and camera phones. I do not know this for a fact, but I’m secretly convinced that 90 percent of high schoolers are sexting each other constantly out of frustration for the educational system and their miserable plight. What else is there to do?

This whole thing is going to get worse before it gets better, and Weiner is just the beginning of a new golden age of comedy. Enjoy it.

Poor Representative Anthony Weiner. He just learned a very tough lesson: Your online activities remain truly your own for only as long as they are still in your head and not in a digital form. What you do online counts. What you say in private matters, what you shared with others can be found. Every single action we take online leaves a trail of debris that could eventually pile up and then topple over on top of us.

Our digital age has come with enormous benefits and some very real consequences. We can share endlessly through email, voice messages, texting, and social networks. The fact that these avenues exist has only encouraged more sharing; certainly more than most people did before with random strangers. Yet, for all the public sharing, there is a steady undercurrent of private digital interaction, and this is where the real trouble lies.

I’d say that roughly 10 percent of my tweets are conducted on Twitter’s Direct Message channel. This is Twitter’s private channel where you can share a 140-character post (including, potentially, a link) with one person. You can only “DM” someone if they are already following you, which means they’ve at least opted in for this possibility. Representative Weiner knows this. He was using this pipeline to send some rather highly personal Tweets to a number of young women. I guess it was like flirting, but ratcheted up a good bit with the inclusion of sometimes salacious language and pictures. The content of these “private” tweets does not interest me. What happened to those tweets, though, does.
